Schools and universities need safety training for three groups: custodial and maintenance staff (AHERA asbestos awareness and O&M), all staff (CPR, AED and emergency preparedness) and campus facilities and lab teams (OSHA, hazardous waste and shipping). ETC delivers this training on your campus, with scheduling built around your calendar.

Training schools are required to provide
Every role on a campus carries its own rule. Here is who needs what, and how often.
Asbestos (AHERA) training for district staff
AHERA applies to every public and private nonprofit K-12 school. Asbestos left in place in floors, ceilings and pipe insulation is legal, but only if trained staff manage it. One untrained custodian scraping a floor tile turns a managed material into an exposure.
We train every level of your asbestos program:
- Custodians and maintenance staff: asbestos awareness training covers where asbestos hides in school buildings and what to do when material is damaged.
- Maintenance staff who work near it: asbestos operations and maintenance training prepares them for small-scale repairs that may disturb asbestos.
- Inspectors: our AHERA building inspector course leads to the accreditation needed to inspect school buildings.
You can see every course in our asbestos training catalog.
Emergency preparedness for staff
When something goes wrong in a classroom, the first responder is a teacher or a front-office employee. Our active shooter and Stop the Bleed training teaches staff what to do in the minutes before police and EMS arrive.
We also run first aid, CPR and AED training for school staff as a private class, scheduled for your group and delivered at your school. Request a quote to book a date.
Both fit alongside your emergency action plan, so staff practice the procedures your campus already has.
Facilities and campus operations
Campus maintenance teams face the same hazards as any commercial facility: roofs, mechanical rooms, live panels and chemicals. We train them with OSHA 10-Hour General Industry as the foundation, then the task courses their work demands:
- Fall protection for roof and elevated work
- Confined space training for vaults, tunnels and tanks
- Arc flash NFPA 70E for campus electricians
University labs and research
Research labs generate regulated waste and ship regulated materials, often without a dedicated EHS person in the building. We train lab and support staff in hazard communication, RCRA hazardous waste training for waste handling, and IATA dangerous goods training for anyone who packs samples or dry ice for air shipment.
Public schools and ADOSH
Arizona’s state plan covers state and local government employees, so ADOSH rules apply to public school districts and state universities, not only to private employers (OSHA: Arizona State Plan). If a staff member files a complaint or gets hurt, ADOSH can inspect your campus the same way it inspects a factory.
How we train school teams
- On your campus. We bring the class to your district, so staff train in the buildings they work in.
- Around the school calendar. Summer break, school holidays and staff development days.
- Several campuses, one plan. We schedule sessions across your schools and send one invoice to the district.
- Flexible delivery for small groups. Ask about virtual refreshers and options for combining staff across campuses.
School districts and universities across Arizona train with ETC. So do more than 10 state agencies, including ADEQ, ADOA and ADOT, and the cities of Phoenix, Tucson, Chandler, Surprise, Buckeye and Yuma.
FAQs
Do school custodians need asbestos training?
Yes. Under AHERA, every custodian and maintenance employee who may work in a K-12 building with asbestos needs at least 2 hours of awareness training, within 60 days of starting the job.
How often is AHERA refresher training required?
AHERA sets the initial training. OSHA’s asbestos standard adds an annual refresher for staff who do maintenance work that may disturb asbestos. Accredited inspectors also renew their accreditation every year. We can put all three on one annual schedule for your district.
Can you train our staff during summer break or on a staff development day?
Yes. Most districts book us for exactly those dates. Tell us your calendar and we will build the schedule around it.
Can you train staff across several campuses in one visit?
Yes. We plan sessions campus by campus or bring staff from several schools to one site, whichever keeps more people at work.
